Few villas in fascinating Galle Fort can match the generous proportions of this historic and luxurious abode. Formerly the residence of the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Pakistan, Iraq and Bangladesh, Ambassador’s House has lavishly hosted many important guests in its illustrious past and its epic proportions still make it a fabulous place for entertaining.

These days the villa enshrines relaxation. Pluck a book or magazine from a cabinet or table top and sink into the deep sofas of the living room. Enjoy a wonderful seafood lunch in the palm-shaded courtyard cooked by your in-house chef, and after a well-deserved nap take a dip in the inviting pool. As the end of the day beckons and the temperature cools, take a leisurely stroll amongst the fort’s ancient cobbled streets, culminating at the grass-tufted ramparts to watch the sun sink into the sea.

By evening, the villa’s soft lighting creates the perfect ambiance for poolside cocktails. At dinnertime, our chef will dazzle you with yet another delicious spread selected from a menu of Western and Sri Lankan dishes: whether a formal feast or a relaxed family get together, every meal at Ambassador’s House is guaranteed to be special. Our friendly staff will happily do their utmost to help youngsters make the most of their stay, and our sociable TV snug, furnished with a big comfortable sofa, is a firm favourite with kids and adults alike.

Beyond the quaint narrow streets, fashionable boutiques and charming cafes of the UNESCO-World-Heritage-listed fort, the wider region of Galle boasts many excellent restaurants, eclectic shops and fascinating places to visit. What’s more, within a ten-minute drive you can be relaxing on one of Sri Lanka’s idyllic beaches, beside a warm, turquoise sea.

Ambassador’s House comprises two generously proportioned buildings seamlessly connected by a lush palm-shaded courtyard. In the single-storey building at the front of the villa is the large and elegant living room, whilst the dining areas and five ensuite air-conditioned bedrooms occupy a two-storey building behind. Three of these bedrooms open directly onto the pool through arched doorways whilst the master bedroom and a twin room are situated on the first floor, opening onto the roof terrace.

All five of the beautiful bedrooms at Ambassador’s House come with both air conditioning and ceiling fans and feature contemporary ensuite bathrooms with hot-water rain showers (plus a moulded tub in the master) beautifully finished in smooth terrazzo. Romantic four-poster beds are dressed in the crispest cotton sheets and shrouded in soft mosquito netting.

On the first floor, the master bedroom and twin bedroom are both characterised by soaring ceilings and polished timber floors. The large master bedroom is fitted with a dreamy four-poster king-sized bed and has its own lounge area, while the airy twin room comes with a pair of four-poster, extra-large single beds.

On the ground floor, and opening through pretty arched doorways onto the pool, are three bedrooms, similar in size, layout and design, each furnished with a king-size four-poster bed.

Ambassador’s House offers a wealth of living and dining space spread over two floors. From quiet tucked away reading corners to sumptuously furnished living and dining rooms designed for socialising in style, Ambassador’s House can be as intimate or convivial as you choose.

Expansive yet elegant, the living room spills invitingly onto the double-colonnaded veranda at the villa’s front; it’s easy to imagine what a favourable impression this majestic room would have made on the distinguished diplomats entertained here in the past. Two huge wall mirrors emphasise the proportions of this beautiful high-ceilinged room which is cooled by whirring ceiling fans.

Beyond a pretty palm-shaded courtyard, the dining room is dominated by a table for ten set beneath another pair of oversized mirrors suspended dramatically from the wall. Next to the dining room is a fully equipped kitchen and to the front is an airy TV room with a deep cushioned corner lounge and TV / DVD player boasting splendid views over the pool. A smaller dining table is located in the courtyard.

Enhanced by a border of fuchsia and tangerine bougainvillea that tumbles gently towards the pool below, the dual-level roof terrace offers further space for relaxation. The upper terrace is shaded, while the lower deck offers the best pool views and sunniest lounging spots. A guest washroom is situated to the rear of the terrace.
