Casa del Alba, Cartagena, Colombia Vacation Rental

This colonial mansion is located in one of the most prestigious sites in Cartagena. After its renovation, Casa de Alba has a harmonious feel with luxurious spaces. However, its charm still lingers on the stories of pirates and Spanish architecture of the XVI century.

Casa de Alba is in the heart of the walled city. The villa is in a prime location, as it is surrounded by unique and historical sites of the city such as: Santa Catalina de Alejandria Cathedral, the Inquisition Museum, Gold Museum, Plaza Santo Domingo, Government Square, Bolivar Park and Plaza San Pedro. In surroundings are also jewelers and the best restaurants and bars in the city.

This historical 1560 home was one of the first buildings made of stone, along with the Cathedral of St. Catalina de Alejandria and the Plaza de la Aduana. However, the home’s history does not revolve around the age of its construction nor its excellent location, but is enhanced by the habitant of Sir Francis Drake; who upon reaching Cartagena chose this place as the space to stay.

Also known as El Draque by Spaniards who believed him to be a pirate, Drake sailed to the Cartagena Bocagrande peninsula, along with a powerful fleet and army prepared. After his arrival, Drake tried to negotiate with the city authorities, however, having not received an immediate response to his requests, Drake incinerated at least two hundred houses in the city. In this attack, the English pirate found documents belonging to the governor. Among these documents was a warning about the coming of "pirate" Drake; which he later regarded as a humiliation and so planned the destruction of the top of the Cathedral. As fate would have it, authorities heard of Drake’s planned attack in time and stopped this plan of revenge, by paying him 107,000 gold crowns. Feeling that this offering was not enough, Drake also took jewelry, the bells of the city and artillery.
