Castelló d'Empúries, Girona, Costa Brava Area, Catalunya, Spain Vacation Rental
The Castelló d'Empúries was built in the XVth century upon the ruins of a former structure. It´s first and most important refurbishing was accomplished in the XVIth century, giving to this beautiful building the Gothic- Renaissance character that we can admire today.
The castle has been witness of several historical events. The most important one being the stay of Queen Juana Enriquez, mother of Fernando el Catolico, who along with his wife Isabel la Catolica were the promoters of the discovery of America (1492), carried by Cristobal Colon.
The Queen Juana Enriquez travelled to Sant Mori from Castille in 1466. She was hosted by her follower Pere de Rocaberti, first baron of Sant Mori. The purspose of the Queen´s trip was to pacify the politically turmoiled Ampurdan. The most important event of this period was the Parliament session of October 15th 1466. It took place in the battlefields between St. Pere Pescador and Sant Jordi Desvalls, where the Queen Juana Enriquez had her headquarters.
The first known owner of the Castelló d'Empúries was Dalmau de Creixell. His inheritor was his son Guillem. His daughter, Gueraula, married Bernat de Vilagut whose family was the next owner of the Castelló d'Empúries.
The Vilagut family was composed of four brothers: Bernat, Guillem, Joan and Pere.
Bernat was the elder and head of the family. He was a shipyard owner. He belonged to the royal court of Alfonso el Magnanimo who acceeded to the throne in 1418. In the year 1420 Bernat sailed to Cerdeña from the port of the Alfaques. During the war years he put his ships to the royal cause transporting goods and soldiers between Cataluña and Italy.
At Bernat´s death, the castle was ruled by his brother Pere Vilagut who also participated in the Italian campaign. He fought as well in the Ampurdan belic conflicts. At that time (1430) the feud of Sant Mori was composed of Vilaur and Gausses, nearby villages. The neighbouring families were in constant fights to enlarge their properties and vassals. When Pere de Vilagut dyed, the heiress of Sant Mori was his wife Juana Rocaberti de Cabrenys. She belong to an important family of the Ampurdan nobility which also had good relation with the central monarchy.
It was Pere de Rocaberti, Juana’s brother , who was the most relevant ruler of the Castelló d'Empúries. He was the first knight who helped the Queen Juana Enriquez—wife of Juan II and mother of Fernando el Catolico –during the war against “La Generalitat”. The Queen did not agree upon Fernando´s nomination as king of Spain and heir to Juan II, but she was more in favor to the Principe de Viana, her first son with the king Juan II. Pere de Rocaberti fought as well with the troops of Juana Enriquez against the Catalan nobility , enemies to the royal cause. When the Queen left the town of Gerona she kept Pere de Rocaberti and his army to defend the town and the crown.
During 1470-1473 Pere de Rocaberti was appointed chancellor to the Diputacion de Gerona, the assembly faithful to the king Juan II. Pere was also appointed governor of Rosellon, the french province belonging to Cataluña at that time.
Pere de Rocaberti dyed around 1490. His heir was Bernat Hug de Rocaberti whose heiress was Caterina de Rocaberti , who married the son of the first duke of Cardona, Jaume de Cardona. During this period the castle was remodelled reaching the Renaissance style which we can appreciate today. Jaume de Cardona put his family armor in the north part of the castle. The Rocaberty armor shows in the windows facing south.
Caterina’s inheritors took the family name as Cardona- Rocaberti.
