What to see and do:
This region is filled with delightful small medieval market towns, many hosting weekly markets full of local produce with some having the summer night markets where there is music and stall selling delicious food. It’s a great night out for families and groups. The Dordogne River is just 15 minutes away where you can picnic or hire kayaks.
Horse and pony riding at the neighbouring riding school is easily arranged with set routes and is open daily (except Mondays).
Golf at the fabulous Chateau Vigiers golf course nearby is popular and the course has practice greens too.
The 'Magic Cauldron' eco farm, named after the pot in which the mohair of 250 angora goats is farm dyed is a great place to visit with children. Little ones will love making friends with the animals which they can touch and feed including lambs and kids, goats, sheep, angora white rabbits, highland cattle and two of the largest grubbiest pigs ever seen. You can also try your hand at cheese or bread making.
There are many festivals & events that take place throughout the region including a very popular annual Jazz festival held in Monsegur at the beginning of July.
A fresh water lake with sandy beach at Blasimon is just 30 minutes away and is a popular attraction to take children for a day out. The gently shelving sand provides a safe, fun environment for splashing around and cooling off in the summer sun.
Further afield, approximately 90 mins drive away, is the 150 mile long sandy beach at Arcachon and Biscarosse. If you have the energy climb the highest sand dune in Europe at Biscarosse, or while the day away meandering around the streets of cosmopolitian Arcachon and enjoy a relaxing lunch in one of the many French restaurants.
Take the opportunity to visit Bordeaux. It is a beautiful town with a fabulous pedestrian heart and a huge amount of money has been spent on the quayside (which has a fantastic Sunday morning organic food market). The Opera House is home to opera, classical music and ballet and Bordeaux has a thriving cultural heritage with live shows, wine tours, fairs and markets.
Saint Emilion - A very important wine town, and is blessed with impressive medieval architecture, including an entire church carved out inside a hill. A walk up to the tower is well worth the effort for beautiful panoramic pictures of the surrounding vineyards that go on as far as your eye can see. Explore the many vineyards open for wine-tasting; also many of the stores in St. Emilion will ship the wine to your home address.
Nerac/Castlemoron - both beautiful towns with chateaux and great restaurants and, best of all, boats that can be hired by the hour (or day) so you can cruise up and down the Canal du Midi with a picnic.
