The property features mature trees including fine citrus and pimento trees together with flowering plants, shrubs and royal palms gently lit in the evening to create a private, secluded, romantic environment. Many grassy areas are readily available for outdoor games with badminton and croquet equipment supplied.
Residence
Designed in 1956 by one of Delaware's leading architects for the original owner, a prominent member of the Dupont family, Great River House’s complete 2007 renovation by well-known modernist architect Tom Reid combines elegant ambiance, stunning expanse, state of the art technology (including internet, wireless and cable TV) with a practical layout.
The 7,500 square foot home is filled with original island crafted mahogany furniture preserving the old Jamaican great house feel yet incorporating modern designer fabric, Kohler-designed en-suite bathrooms complete with water tiles, a chef's kitchen and a large Entertainment/Library/Game room with a 32 inch flat screen TV and DVD opening to the tropical property. Elegant candlelight dinners are served in a formal (air conditioned) dining room or outside under the stars on the large stone deck surrounding the extraordinary serpentine, infinity edged pool. Extensive artwork by famous illustrator Arthur Taylor, George Rodrigue and original botanical and Jamaican watercolors and oils create an interesting and peaceful atmosphere throughout the house.
The villa is entered through a carved mahogany front door opening to a large living room with views through to the Caribbean Sea. This in turn leads to an extensive covered veranda focusing on indoor/outdoor living so much a part of Jamaican life. The new serpentine, infinity-edged pool with waterfall, fountain and children’s area is but two steps down from the living area and is surrounded by a 2,400 square foot stone deck with nooks and crannies for relaxing. In addition, a flower filled side courtyard complete with outdoor shower offers a retreat for relaxing and rejuvenating spa treatments. Throughout the day and evening the Great River valley breezes and trade winds create a gentle, tropical environment.
Combining tradition and innovation each of the five bedrooms and en-suite baths is filled with custom made island furniture accented with well known designer fabrics, fluffy towels, pillows and fine linens as well as good sized closets and chests for clothes. Four bedrooms radiate from the living core of the house. The fifth bedroom and bath has its own low-walled terrace complete with seating and access to the tennis court and expansive gardens on the lower level near the entertainment/ games area and powder room. Configurations of the bedrooms are king beds in three with the remaining two having twins which may be combined into kings. A pull out twin sleeper/sofa is available in one of the bedrooms.
